Established in 1848 to protect settlers from Indians and marauding bandits, Fort Bliss is now the premier center for air defense, a 1.1 million-acre post larger than the state of Rhode Island and accommodating every weapon system in the Army.

Youth and child services are plentiful, many from the Community Services Center, as are indoor and outdoor recreation opportunities. Things to do include a parks system; water park; swimming pool; gyms; softball complex; bowling; Centennial Club for dancing; The Golden Tee; rod and gun club; framing shop, and a golf complex.
